OCCA residents,
We’re excited to share construction updates on the ongoing water quality improvement project in the Oxford Crossing Community. This Submerged Gravel Stormwater Management System (SGSMS) project replaces the existing stormwater management facility. An SGSMS improves water quality by capturing, managing, and treating stormwater runoff. Below are key details about our progress and what to expect next.
Current Construction Activities
Traffic Management:
Signs have been installed to navigate sidewalk closures on the west side of Connecticut Avenue. Pedestrians are directed to cross to the east side using existing crosswalks at Bel Pre Road and South Leisure World Boulevard. Temporary traffic control measures, including partial lane closures, are in place during work hours to ensure safety.
Tree Care:
Welded wire protection fences are now in place for trees that will remain.
Erosion and Sediment Control:
We’ve implemented construction best practices measures to protect the surrounding property, including:
-
Gravel access roads to the pond basin and truck mats to limit erosion from construction vehicles.
-
Sandbags and erosion sediment filter logs made of natural fibers to capture debris from stormwater runoff. These will be removed following construction and replaced with plant material to stabilize potential erosion.
What’s Happening Now
-
Crews are excavating and re-grading the existing pond basin to increase stormwater storage volume for the new system.
-
Two northern inflow protection structures will be installed to prevent rainwater and runoff from entering the new system.
-
We are preparing for the installation of gabion weirs, which will further enhance stormwater management by controlling water flow.
Looking Ahead
-
In spite of January’s inclement weather, the project remains on schedule, with completion expected by this summer.
-
During the next few weeks, existing material will be excavated from the basin, creating space for the new SGSMS.
-
In mid-February, concrete work on the rise structure will begin, replacing the current failing metal infrastructure.
Important Reminders
-
Construction takes place on weekdays from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we make progress on this project.
